Can you charge the batteries with an alternator?

Modified on Mon, 14 Apr at 5:24 PM

LiFePO4 batteries require a strict charging voltage range (14.2V–14.6V for 12V systems). Standard alternators (13.8V–14.5V) may exceed this upper limit, risking overcharging and battery damage.

Solution: Install a lithium-compatible DC-DC charger (e.g., Victron or Renogy) to regulate voltage to 14.4V and cut off at 14.6V .

LiFePO4 requires a Constant Current (CC) → Constant Voltage (CV) profile. Standard alternators lack this programmability.

Mandatory: Use a DC-DC charger with CC/CV mode to follow the optimal charging curve .

Final Answer

Yes, but only with a DC-DC charger configured for LiFePO4 (14.4V output, CC/CV mode). Direct alternator connection risks overvoltage and incomplete charging.
